Summer Family Photo Session Style

Most families plan photo sessions for the fall, but summer can be such a beautiful time to capture your family whether indoors or outside. Read ahead for a few different palette options that could suit a variety of personal styles.

Pastels. Light pastels are such a beautiful way to capture the joy and airiness of summer. You can add in one to three light colors with a base of ivory, khaki, chambray, or camel. Because the greenery is so rich at these times, it’s best to avoid navy blues and hunter greens if you’re doing an outdoor session. For depth and layering, lace, chiffon, eyelet, and silk are perfect for the warmer months.

Neutrals. Choosing one color and adding in various tints, tones, and shades is a perfect way to make a family look cohesive, especially for an extended family session. You can add character and personality by choosing florals, simple patterns, or different weights of fabric such as lace, silk, or linen. Keep pants and skirts within the same tones to create a timeless and classic look.

Pop of Color. Neutrals and lights shades don’t suit all families. If you love bold colors, then bring that same spark to your family photos. We see neutrals, flowy dresses, and florals in abundance with family sessions these days. However, if you don’t feel comfortable in the clothes you are wearing during your session it will show in your photos. Pair a top with a fun pattern, embroidered design, or funky cut with a favorite fair of jeans of pants. Bring in color with the kids clothes or simple accessories. Keep colors in jewel tones or deeper shades rather than primary colors or neons.

I love helping my clients pick out their outfits and choose what best suits them and their family. I can help guide you in the right direction or go so far as to pick exact outfits you’ll love. If choosing your outfits is one of the reasons you have yet to book a family photo session, please reach out to me! When you feel the best in the clothes you’re wearing, your photos will be genuine and full of love.
